Embracing the Power of Open Source:

Through use of our Axiomedix Expert Network, we leverage code contributors directly when working with our customers to customize their deployments. These new features can then be incorporated into the next official releases of the open source platforms. These expert engineers also act as support agents on our support portal (support.axiomedix.com).

Supporting the Community:

We pay a “royalty” on our Axiomedix Distributions to:
• The open source foundations.
• The open source developers who work with us to build and support these distributions.

Staying Open Minded:

We don’t presume to have all the answers ourselves. We will invest in the platforms that our network and customers tell us are important, too. This adds valuable flexibility to our menu of solutions, and means we work with proprietary software in addition to open source.

Forward Thinking:

We are interested in the possibility of expanding to new open source verticals as we go: finance, pharmaceutical research & development, machine learning, and more. These separate brands will operate in parallel using our existing infrastructure, including leveraging (and expanding) the Axiomedix Expert Network.

Use Cases:

One of the many benefits of open source software is its flexibility. Code is contributed from all sizes and types of organizations, and aims to tackle a wide variety of challenges. Currently, Axiomedix offerings focus on three main categories of use.

Patient Recruitment:

One of the most common uses of the i2b2 platform is exploration and identification of a patient cohort for a particular clinical study. The ability to easily look across a wide range of patient information for particular symptoms, medical history, genomic profile, etc. and review and analyze the resulting sets of patients make our platforms useful for clinicians and research teams.
For example, large hospitals and medical centers load data on millions of patients into i2b2 to evaluate clinical trial feasibility and to accelerate patient recruitment. Through a web-based query tool, investigators can define complex inclusion and exclusion criteria, apply temporal and value-based constraints, and access patients’ notes and biobank data.

Translational Studies:

The tranSMART platform is used in translational studies to integrate high-dimensional data (including genomics, proteomics, imaging, and more) from multiple sources. Both clinicians and data scientists can explore and analyze data with tranSMART’s rich but user-friendly analysis tools.

Federated Networks:

Institutions that map their local coding systems to a common ontology can use the SHRINE software in tandem with i2b2 to build federated data networks, which protect patient privacy by keeping the data within each hospital’s local database. The largest SHRINE networks currently contain data on more than 100 million patients, enabling large population-wide studies.
It is important to note that these different architectures can be combined, so that an institution can use the same i2b2 core database for more than one use case. This flexibility is what makes i2b2 unique and is a main reason why the platform has been adopted by more than 300 institutions worldwide.
